Part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the First World War and occupied by the Royal Italian Army from the official declaration of war, Kobarid went down in history as the symbol of the action that led to the Italian retreat to the front on the Piave River during the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo (October 24 – November 9 1917). The historic town centre and the surrounding area still bear witness to the war. The route passes through Kobarid and then climbs up through striking and beautiful scenery, following paths and lanes that sometimes touch some small villages and finally lead to the uncontaminated and green environment of the alpine pastures.
