Togliano, Saint Maurus Abbot Church
[16th-18th centuries]
The Church of Saint Maurus Abbot in Togliano is preceded by a square atrium dating back to the 16th century, which extends in continuity with the hall. Originally, the atrium was open on three sides, but two of these have been walled up and fitted with two rectangular windows per wall. The rectangular entrance door is flanked by two other windows with iron bars.
Inside, to the right of the entrance, there is a marble holy water stoup embedded in the wall, bearing the date 1558. The hall is single, with an exposed beam ceiling. There is no presbytery; the small, low semicircular apse with a half-dome vault contains a wooden altar with a painting depicting Saint Maurus, with Saints Gervasius and Peter on either side. Previously, there was a carved and gilded wooden altarpiece in place of this painting, but its whereabouts are unknown. A writing on the left wall of the hall indicates that the church was restored in 1749. On the right wall, there is a faint fresco depicting Saint Maurus and a noblewoman accompanied by ladies, offering the saint the necessary help for the reconstruction of the church, as a sign of gratitude for being spared from some calamity, possibly a plague. Consecration crosses are visible on the walls.
