The old Railway Station - Great War Museum [19th–20th century]

[19th–20th century]

The building was constructed for the Udine-Cividale railway line, inaugurated on June 24, 1886, and later extended during World War I with a section to Caporetto, which remained operational until 1932.
The building has a compact volume rising two floors above ground, sideways defined by two lower bodies, with terraces on the first floor featuring elegant artificial stone parapets. The façades, marked by arched openings, are plastered and embellished with four pilasters and a string course that features a large clock, concealed behind a bell tower. Access is through three large arched portals with fine iron and glass fittings, now protected by a portico added in the early 20th century. Besides the passenger building and the freight yard (with an attached warehouse), there were also a locomotive shed, a water tower, a coal storage area, and an armaments warehouse, now demolished.
In 2008, the building was abandoned in favor of a new station located about a hundred meters to the west, on the opposite side of Viale Foramitti.
Since 2015, the structure has housed the Great War Museum of Cividale, created by the Alpine troops of the ANA Section of Cividale along with volunteers. It showcases stories of men and soldiers who were significant during World War I, with a section dedicated to the history of the Cividale-Caporetto railway line.
