Prestento - Medieval Fortified House and Caves
[3rd? - 12th-16th centuries]
The locality of Prestento, known as "Corte," has Lombard origins tied to the presence of a curtis, a fortified farmstead. Roman finds, including a cinerary urn with a balsamarium and traces of a furnace, indicate a Roman settlement. The settlement is documented from the 12th century, and in the 13th century, it was owned by Patriarch Gregory of Montelongo, who installed the nobles of Soffumbergo as stewards. In the 14th century, the Corte belonged to the Canalei family from Cividale, who in the 16th century built a "Corte Nuova" (New Corte) as a country residence, of which only the foundations of a small tower and a few other structures remain.
The current buildings belong to the so-called "Corte Vecchia," (Old Corte) retaining traces of medieval structures, such as the crenellated walls and the 18th-century pillars of the entrance gate.
Following the white road for about a kilometre, you reach a small bridge over the Sclesò stream. From there, a path leads to the junction of two caves: the first is the Foràn des Aganis Cave (Aganis' Hollow) and the second is the Foràn di Landri Cave (Cave's Hollow). These prehistoric sites open on the side of the coast extending from Monte Picàt to Monte San Lorenzo. Continuing the ascent beyond the rocky ridge, you reach Casa Pèc, from which there is a magnificent view over the entire valley.
