Ring between nature, stories and mountains: the Lake nestled between the Julian Alps.
Just a few kilometers from the border with Slovenia, in the heart of the Julian Alps, Lake Predil (or Lake Raibl) is a small natural wonder waiting to be discovered. The second largest of Friuli Venezia Giulia's natural lakes, it occupies an ancient glacial basin nestled between majestic peaks and silent forests.
Streams flowing down from the mountains feed the lake with waters so pure that they color it a deep blue-green. In summer it invites swimming, with perfect nooks and crannies for relaxing, sunbathing and admiring the alpine landscape.
In winter, the lake turns into a frozen mirror-a suspended place, ideal for those who love quiet, muffled atmospheres and the charm of winter in the mountains.
But Lago del Predil is not only nature: history also surfaces along the trails, as at Forte del Lago (Raibl Fort), a testimony to the area's military past and guardian of the memory of a border territory.
Excursion recommended in autumn due to an intense coloration of the foliage of the woods surrounding the lake, but very impressive also in winter in its easiest part, although the use of crampons is recommended. We recommend visiting the nearby mines i Cave del Predil with its mining museum, a place of unquestionable charm rich in history and significance.

Hike not recommended in case of uncertain weather (the eastern part in the forest is bumpy and rather steep with some sections equipped with cable).
There are almost no water sources along the loop; in case of particularly hot days consider having an adequate amount of water resources with you.
Public-transport-friendly
The starting point can also be reached by public transport. From Tarvisio it is possible to get to the lake using the TPL line 204 Tarvisio - Cave del Predil. Tarvisio, in turn, is easily accessible by both bus and train.Normal hiking equipment, depending on the season.
