Easy hike through the Carnic Alps to reach the enchanting Avostanis lake.
Avostanis Lake is a small high-altitude jewel, nestled at the foot of the homonymous mountain and dominated by the vertical limestone cliffs crowning it to the north, in a severe but fascinating environment, marked by time and history. This glacial origin water mirror, with clear and cold waters, reflects the verticality of the surrounding mountains, creating a scene of great suggestion and visual strength, where nature and memory intertwine deeply.
The hike to the lake starts from Malga Pramosio, easily reachable by car during the summer season. From here, a well-marked and moderately challenging trail gradually climbs through high-altitude meadows, pastures, and rocky areas, offering splendid views of the surrounding mountains and the Austrian side of the Carnic chain.
Avostanis Lake is located in a secluded basin, below the ridge marking the natural border with Austria. The surrounding environment is wild and rocky, also frequented by climbing enthusiasts attracted by the famous cliff. The lake represents a perfect resting spot, ideal to catch your breath and be enveloped by silence, often broken only by the wind or the call of a bird of prey in flight.
But this place is not just nature: it is also land of memory. Shortly before reaching the lake, along the trail, there is a commemorative plaque dedicated to Maria Plozner Mentil, one of the symbolic figures of the Carnic porters. Here, in 1916, Maria was shot dead by an Austro-Hungarian sniper while carrying out her hard task. Her figure still represents the courage and sacrifice of many women who, during the First World War, worked under extreme conditions to support Italian soldiers along the front line.
The hike to Avostanis Lake thus combines landscape and history, nature and memory, offering a complete and intense experience, recommended for those seeking an authentic mountain corner, away from the busiest routes, where every step tells something.

For those wishing to reach the location by public transport, it is recommended to start from the village of Timau, from where you can take the CAI 402 trail that climbs to Malga Pramosio.
The recommended line is 130 Tolmezzo – Arta Terme – Sutrio – Paluzza – Timau of the TPL FVG service, with a stop at "Timau via Nazionale".
From Tolmezzo, take the But Valley following the SS52, passing through the villages of Arta Terme and Paluzza, until you reach Cleulis. Here turn right onto Via Muses (near Bar Pacai) and follow the signs to Malga Pramosio, taking the dirt road Via Martiri di Pramosio until you reach the hut.
The road section from Cleulis to Malga Pramosio is dirt, but generally in good condition and passable by normal cars during the opening months of the hut, usually from late spring to early autumn (weather permitting).
