Easy hike in the Carnic Alps to reach the charming Lake Avostanis.
Lake Avostanis is a small high-altitude jewel, set at the foot of the mountain of the same name and dominated by the vertical limestone walls that crown it to the north, in a severe but fascinating environment marked by time and history. This sheet of water of glacial origin, with its clear and cold waters, reflects the verticality of the mountains that surround it, creating a setting of great suggestion and visual strength, in which nature and memory are deeply intertwined.
The hike to the lake starts from Malga Pramosio, easily accessible by car during the summer season. From here, a well-marked and moderately challenging trail climbs gradually through high-altitude meadows, pastures and rocky areas, offering splendid views of the surrounding mountains and the Austrian side of the Carnic chain.
Lake Avostanis lies in a secluded basin below the ridge that marks the natural border with Austria. The environment surrounding it is wild and rocky, also frequented by climbing enthusiasts, attracted by the famous cliff. The lake represents a perfect resting place, ideal for refreshment and being enveloped in silence, often interrupted only by the wind or the call of a few birds of prey in flight.
But this place is not only nature: it is also a land of memory. Just before reaching the lake, along the path, you will come across a memorial plaque dedicated to Maria Plozner Mentil, one of the symbolic figures of Carnic women porters. Here, in 1916, Maria was shot dead by an Austro-Hungarian sniper while carrying out her hard task. Her figure still represents the courage and sacrifice of so many women who, during World War I, worked under extreme conditions to support Italian soldiers along the front line.
The one to Lake Avostanis is therefore a hike that combines landscape and history, nature and memory, offering a complete and intense experience, recommended for those seeking an authentic corner of the mountains, far from the beaten track, where every step tells something.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
Starting from Malga Promosio (1,521 m), take the obvious dirt road following the signs for Lake Avostanis (CAI trail No. 402).
Continuing along the cartroad you reach the memorial plaque dedicated to Maria Plozner Mentil, placed in the place where the bearer was shot to death in 1916. It then continues to the former Morgante Refuge (about 1,700 m a.s.l.), where there is a water trough with running water, useful for a short stop.
The ascent continues on the same dirt road, with steeper and steeper switchbacks and a panoramic view that gradually opens up to the valley below and the surrounding peaks. You then reach Lake Avostanis (about 1,930 m), set in an alpine setting of rare beauty, dominated by the limestone walls of Mount Avostanis and the Creta di Timau.
The return trip is on the same route as the outward journey, with the possibility of enjoying the view on the descent as well.
For those wishing to reach the resort by public transport, it is recommended to start from the village of Timau, from which it is possible to take CAI path 402 that goes up to Malga Promosio.
The recommended line is the 130 Tolmezzo - Arta Terme - Sutrio - Paluzza - Timau line of the TPL FVG service, getting off at the "Timau via Nazionale" stop.
From Tolmezzo, take the But Valley following the SS52, passing through the villages of Arta Terme and Paluzza, until you reach Cleulis. Here turn right into Via Muses (near Bar Pacai) and follow the signs for Malga Promosio, taking the dirt road Via Martiri di Promosio until you reach the malga.
The stretch of road from Cleulis to Malga Promosio is unpaved, but generally in good condition and passable with normal cars during the months when the malga is open, usually from late spring to early fall (weather conditions permitting).
Ample parking adjacent to Malga Promosio.
