A hike among highland meadows, ridges and peaks that are easily reached by following ancient trails serving alpine life and a section of the Farinarie Trail.
From Castel Valdajer (1340 m), we follow the nearly 6 km of cartroad, first on asphalt and then on dirt road, that approaches Lake Dimon (1852 m), in the center of its glacial basin. From here we climb in short order to Malga Montelago (1920 m) from where, at the end of the roadway, we take the path that climbs with a few hairpin bends to the summit of Monte Paularo (2043 m); exceptional views of Val Grande and the Coglians. Returning to the hut (either by the ascent route or by the short ridge east of Paularo), we take trail 404-part of the Sentiero delle Farinarie-that cuts across the slope of Mount Dimon; 500 meters from the attack, trail 456, narrow against the grassy slope, comes off to the left and climbs to the ridge of Mount Dimon (2043 m). We continue eastward on the ridge until we rejoin trail 404, which descends a few switchbacks to the base of a saddle. After a stretch at altitude, we can spot (a bit of a struggle) the ascent to Mt. Neddis (1990 m), a must for the spectacular views of Sernio, Julian Alps, mountains on the Austrian border, Friulian Dolomites in the distance, Zoncolan, Tersadia, and the beautiful summit with cross and bell.
From the Neddis, return to the 404 and follow it downhill, passing Cima Val di Legnan (1709 m, service hut of a repeater station) and, via a series of disused and partly grassy mountain pasture roads, arriving at the Castle parking lot.
It is recommended that you do the loop clockwise, walking the long approach driveway first to keep the beauty of the views in your eyes for the rest of the hike. You will be walking in an area of naturalistic interest: it is worth lingering over the wild blooms.
Tested by Light Baggage
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
Bring adequate water supplies along the route.
Some sections of the trail and at least one detour (the one to Mount Neddis) are not too obvious, especially with the lush summer vegetation. There is only one water source along the trail, but there are several streams.
Normal hiking equipment.
