These relics of the Great War are located on steep, grassy slopes to the left of the landslide on the south face of Chiadenis. These bastions, in ruins until about a dozen years ago, have been partially restored to their original condition through an initiative of the Veneto Region.

This is a special route, primarily of a historical nature, but it can prove very engaging if the ruins are visited with the right mindset. The first of the two forts, with a very complex structure, was most likely a logistics base for our frontline soldiers, very close by. When observing the loopholes, walls, and metal stakes, it’s hard not to think of those dramatic pages of our history and, perhaps, feel like one of those alpine soldiers struggling with all the hardships imposed by the terrible situation. Even on holiday, history should not be ignored. The other fort, given its position, probably had a strategic function. Besides these particular aspects, the walk is very pleasant in itself thanks to the beautiful landscape. There are also two large informational panels. Be careful not to touch the stones of the fort inadvertently: vipers love rocky and sunny places like this!

    WARNINGS

    • The information below cannot replace the presence of a professional alpine guide
    • The mountain is a wonderful environment but not without risks, so it should always be approached with the utmost caution
    • In the Warnings of the CAI/TCI Guides to the Italian Mountains it is stated that the difficulty classification “remains essentially indicative and should be considered as such,” being a subjective element. This also applies to the routes proposed on the site
    • The difficulty classification and walking times refer to a hiker/alpinist of medium level in terms of training, experience, skills, and fitness
    • When undertaking a specific route, carefully evaluate the difficulties, your own abilities, and your fitness level
    • Before starting an itinerary (other than a short walk) it is good practice to: 1) consult the Dolomiti Meteo of Arpav by going to the site http://www.arpa.veneto.it or calling 049 8239399 (Option 2). Unlike national weather bulletins, it offers a fairly reliable local forecast. 2) obtain information from the Tourist Office, the local CAI section, alpine guides, refuge managers. Indeed, the passability of a route and its difficulty level may undergo significant changes even in a very short time due to natural events (landslides, unfavorable weather conditions) and/or contingent situations (deterioration of trail markers, fixed equipment, presence of residual snowfields, etc.)
    • The mobile phone may give a false sense of security, as there are areas without phone coverage
    • In the unfortunate event of an accident, illness, or inability to continue, contact only and exclusively the emergency number SUEM 118

© Excerpt from the Guide "Sappada, from the paths to the peaks" by Giovanni Borella, published by the CO.EL. publishing house.

Giovanni Borella born in Belluno, lived there until the threshold of adolescence. He later moved to Padua, where he still resides, attending the local University and earning a degree in Ancient Literature which led him to teach for a few decades. A hiker first, then an alpinist, he has completed numerous ascents both in the most renowned Dolomite groups and especially on the mountains of Sappada, which he frequents for many years both in summer and winter and where he has also opened new routes and repeated others solo. He has published three guides: "On the paths of the sun" Mediterranee ed. 1995 as co-author, "Sappada, from the paths to the peaks" Co.El. publishing house 2002, "Dolomites of Comelico" Linteditoriale 2010.

    Equipment

Even if the route is easy (for example, a mushroom foraging route), always wear appropriate shoes with a carved, anti-slip sole. Also, always carry additional clothing in case of weather changes.
