The refuge is located in a very panoramic position on the northern edge of Pian dei Larici, next to the upper station of the chairlift. Behind it are the massive rock structures of Siera Spitz, Piccolo Siera, and Cima Dieci.

The walk attracts a fair number of day-trippers who want to reach, with a relatively short, sunny, and overall not tiring path, a suggestive viewpoint overlooking the valley, surrounded by a splendid Dolomite environment. The route climbs, without possibility of error, the broad track that snakes through the dense fir forests on the right of Longrone woods ( attention : the refuge is closed in the summer season).

On the technical sheet of each itinerary, the commonly used abbreviations in mountain guides (T- E - EE- EEA - A) are present. Some itineraries may have a double abbreviation (e.g.: T/E or E/EE) as they have the characteristics of both categories.

T (tourist) indicates  itineraries almost always short and easy that take place on forest roads and/or well-marked or otherwise obvious paths that do not require special training.

E (hiking) indicates routes, sometimes quite long, that wind along mule tracks and/or paths often above 2000 meters, clear but not always with trail blazes. They have no significant difficulties, but can sometimes present some exposed or awkward sections. Appropriate equipment, some experience, and training are required.

EE (for experienced hikers) indicates itineraries generally at altitudes above 2000 meters, which may take place on treacherous terrain and/or in rugged areas. They often feature exposed and/or equipped sections, sometimes on rocks with first-degree difficulty. Experience, sure-footedness, sense of orientation, good equipment, and physical and mental preparation are required.

EEA (for experienced hikers with equipment) indicates routes equipped with metal ropes, steps, ladders. The exposure is almost always constant. Experience, training, and adequate equipment including helmet and via ferrata set are mandatory. Gloves are useful.

A (for climbers) indicates rock routes leading to peaks with low climbing difficulties (1st/2nd degree). They require technical skills, good experience, physical preparation, and suitable equipment (helmet, some slings, and always useful a piece of rope 20-30 meters long).

    WARNINGS

    • The information below cannot replace the presence of a professional mountain guide
    • The mountain is a wonderful environment but not free from risks, so it must always be approached with the utmost caution
    • In the Warnings of the Guides of the Mountains of Italy C.A.I./T.C.I., it is stated that the difficulty classification “remains essentially indicative and must be considered as such,” being a subjective element. This also applies to the itineraries proposed on this website
    • The difficulty classification and travel times refer to a hiker/climber of average level in terms of training, experience, skills, training
    • When undertaking a certain route, carefully evaluate its difficulties, your abilities, and your level of training
    • Before facing an itinerary (that is not a short walk) it is good practice to: 1) consult the Dolomiti Meteo of Arpav, connecting to the site http://www.arpa.veneto.it or calling 049 8239399 (Option 2). The bulletin, unlike national weather bulletins, offers a fairly reliable local forecast. 2) gather information at the Tourist Office, the local C.A.I. section, mountain guides, hut managers. In fact, the state of passability of an itinerary and its level of difficulty can undergo significant changes even over a very short time due to natural events (landslides, unfavorable weather) and/or contingent situations (deterioration of markings, fixed equipment, presence of residual snowfields, etc.)
    • The cellphone can give a false sense of security, because you must consider that there are areas without phone coverage
    • In the unfortunate event of an accident, illness, or inability to continue, contact only and exclusively the SUEM 118

    Roadbook

From the small square of Cima Sappada, take the white path that goes southwest through the meadows until it ends at the "national" ski slope (signs). Follow this for only about ten meters, then turn right following a forest road among the trees leading shortly to the "tourist" slope.

If instead you start from the chairlift parking lot, take the path (signs) that runs along the edge of the forest up to the "national" slope (signs). Cross it and take the forest road up to the "tourist" slope. Climb it for a long stretch until Pian dei Nidi with a moderate and regular gradient, then with some stretches you reach the beautiful clearing where the refuge is located.

The return is on the same route or with itineraries 5 and 6 using the same time.
