However you choose to reach it, the view of Lake Sauris will leave you speechless.
As you travel up the narrow
Lumiei valley, where human engineering has achieved a road connection between the bottom of the valley and the town of Sauris through massive tunnel works, or through the overhead passage road of the
Pura Pass, you will find a
mirror of water where the surrounding multicoloured heights are dazzlingly reflected.
It was created through an artificial dam in the 1950s, and for years was the basin featuring the highest dam in Italy, towering 136 metres over the bottom of the Lumiei torrent. At regular intervals, ordinary maintenance work on the lake involves draining the basin and on those rare occasions, the spectacle of the ancient village of La Maina emerging from the waters captivates and amazes all visitors.
An Alpine lake where
many outdoor activities find their perfect location:
sport fishing, canoeing, or windsurfing. But also pure adrenaline connected to the
Zip-Line, one of the longest in Italy, a different way to experience this corner of Carnia, perhaps after a fresh beer brewed right in Sauris, to build up your courage to soar above the waters!
