Legend has it that there was once a small village where the lake stands. The inhabitants were insensitive people and on a cold winter night, they refused to shelter a woman and child who had come from afar. Only a poor family offered them a roof, showering the mother and child with care. The next morning the lake had covered the whole village except for a small island with the home of the friendly family, while the woman and child had disappeared.
A short distance from the Slovenian border,
Lake Predil (or Raibl) covers an
ancient glacial basin and is the region's
second-largest natural lake after Cavazzo Lake.
.Lying at the foothills of the soaring peaks of the
Julian Alps, the lake is fed by the waters of the many streams flowing down from the surrounding mountains. Their purity lends the waters an intense blue-green hue.
Clear, cold waters that turn to ice in the long winter season, an ideal time to witness the extraordinary stillness of nature.
The lake is safe for swimming in summer and there are plenty of places to soak up the good alpine sun, including around the small island as described in the “legend of the lake.”
Around the banks, a beautiful hike lets you experience the nature of the Julian Alps thoroughly while also experiencing traces of the history of these places, which, as at the
Raibl Fort, is not only memory but a tangible reality of the past!
