Malghe Montasio

Snowshoeing in Friuli Venezia Giulia

Where: Sella Nevea (Tarvisio and surroundings, Udine)

From Sella Nevea walk with snowshoes up to the Montasio plateau to enjoy a wonderful view over malghe (shepherd's huts) and magnificent summits

Difficulty: medium
Hours: about 6
Difference in height: 450 m

Among the snowshoe routes in Friuli Venezia Giulia's mountains, the one which leads to the discovery of the Montasio malghe is one of the most charming. The Montasio is often called Jôf by local people, which means "yoke" and, in a figurative way "summit". The Montasio has three sides: the western side of Dogna, the northern side of the Saisera Valley, and the southern side, which can be reached from Sella Nevea and is characterised by a wide and sunny plateau.

This tour extends across the large pastures on the southern side, where there are many casera huts, open in summer, some of which can be seen along the itinerary. The route is charming in summer but, in winter, with snowshoes, discovering these fairy-tale landscapes is amazing.

The route
To reach the Montasio plateau, leave from Sella Nevea, near the hairpin bend, where the summer road starts (closed to the traffic in winter), which leads to the plateau and to the Alpine hut of Brazzà. Follow the road for 6 kilometres as far as the large parking area (covered in snow in winter), where you will enjoy a panoramic view over the whole southern side of the Montasio.

From here a wonderful tour starts, going alongside Casera Parte di Mezzo, Casera Larice and Casera Cregnedûl, with the possibility to reach the Alpine hut of Brazzà (1660 m).

From these huts you will enjoy wonderful views over the surrounding valleys and over the close peaks of Mount Canin. Follow the same road to go back to Sella Nevea.
