The area of the Carnic Alps, together with the Tagliamento Valley and the Tolmezzo basin, preserves a geological heritage of exceptional value, unique in the European context. Here, there are geologically significant sites of global importance and the most complete sedimentary sequences of the entire Alpine arc, documenting a geological history of almost 500 million years, from the Paleozoic to the Mesozoic. Complementing this extraordinary landscape is the significant presence of paleontological remains, which are essential for reconstructing the evolution of life on Earth.
Through its itineraries, educational and informative initiatives, visitor centers, and museums, the Geopark offers a different and engaging way to experience and learn about the mountains.
The Geopark of the Carnic Alps is managed by the Carnia Mountain Community on behalf of 31 municipalities (28 from Carnia and 3 from the Val Canale-Canal del Ferro), and the Val Canale Canal del Ferro Mountain Community.
