Description:
Starting from the parking area at Casera Ramaz (1070mt), proceed for a short time along the road leading to Cason di Lanza pass and to Casera Meledis bassa.
After entering the paddock, hike up to the left, toward the rangeland’s higher edge. Here among the trees, starts a large mule track, with some sparce yellow-and-red roadmark painted on the trunks. There should be no further problems anyway, since from the start on the trail is well-kept.
Hike up into a dense wood and proceed eastward along a stretch partially occupied by vegetation. After meeting the deep incision of rio Malifier, it’s necessary climb up several small bends. The trail suddenly changes direction and shortly after you’ll reach a beautiful glade that you must cross pointing to the visible trail on the other side. In June, the glade becomes a natural “garden” thanks to the bloom of the globe-flowers, the elder-flowered orchid, the heartsease and other species. After a short time through the firs, you’ll arrive to the rangeland of Casera Meledis alta.
Pointing at the alm complex, hike up along the meadow. From here, take the service dirt road that a little higher joins the trail with roadmark CAI 448. Follow it westward, ignoring a first fork that leads to the right and into Austria.
At the next fork (CAI 448b Celts trail where you may abbreviate the route, turn left and reach Casera Lodin alta), proceed along the ridge of Val Puartis peak. Turn right and along the northern slope. Crossing it along the hillside, you’ll’arrive to a wide pass with a vast alpine peat bog nearby and its habitat’s typical floreal species.
At this point trail CAI 448 turns left toward the peat bog and Casera Lodin alta. The itinerary goes on, keeping the basin’s right side, in the direction of the visible pass located on the border, after which there is a good trail. Follow it along the grassy slope rich various types of gentians, and reach the wide ridge. Along the climb you’ll find the remains of war constructions, while the ridge wears thin in the proximity of the peak. At the peak of Mt. Lodin (2025mt), you’ll find a wood crux and an extended panorama.
Hike down along the ridge, among the reamins of tenches and tracks over debris, to the underlying, panoramic Lodinut Pass (1817mt). Abandon the roadmark along the border and hike down to the left along a detric watershed, to the base of the which you’ll again find the roadmarks (CAI 457) nearby the remains of Casera Lodinut alta. Flank the southern slope of Mt. Lodin until Casera Lodina alta, located on an extended moraine plateau in open position (1680mt).
Starting from the dairy hut, follow the trail eastward, at first on a straight line and slightly inclined, through the pasturing area. After entering the wood, the incline markedly increases. With a series of steep bends, after passing Ramaz Alta sheltefr, you’ll be back at casera Ramaz, start point.
Access:
Proceeding along Carnia state road toward Tolmezzo-Mt. Croce Carnico Pass, at Cedarchis, by the bridge over Chiarsò River, turn right toward Paularo. In the village, take the long and narrow road leading to Cason di Lanza Pass until Casera Ramaz, where the road bends east.
