The bare, steep slope of Mount Tremol overlooks the ski slopes of Piancavallo. The summit is easily accessible, even without touring skis and ski skins, walking along the southwest ridge from the mountain station of the chairlift Tremol 2. The south exposure of the slope causes the snowpack to transform quickly and so, even in the middle of winter, it is often possible to ski on firn. Given the steepness of the slope, the descent should be avoided or done with extreme caution in case of hard snow and ice; crampons may be useful when climbing.
Access
From Aviano drive the panoramic road up to Piancavallo. Once you reach the centre, you can park at the valley station of the chairlift (17 km from Aviano).
Ascent
Using the Tremol and Tremol 2 chairlift, we reach the mountain station of the second lift located in the Val dei Sass at an altitude of 1820 meters. Upon arrival, go downhill for a hundred meters, then climb left along an old skislope to the base of the south ridge of Mount Tremol, until the old mountain station of the chairlift Tremol 2. From here, following the signs of the Alta Via dei Rondoi, after a short and easy track equipped with steel cables, we pass by the antenna to the left. After a short steep track, we cross the ridge, without any difficulty, up to the summit of Tremol (2007 m, 150 m of difference in altitude, 30’ from the chairlift).
Descent
From the top of Mount Tremol, depending on snow conditions, ski experience and skills, you can opt for two backcountry runs.
Route 1
The simpler and more popular one descends towards south-east and ends on the Salomon ski slope in the valley of the Arneri Refuge at an altitude of 1550 meters. The incline of the slope, about 30-35 degrees, and the width of the slope, allow a rewarding run along the entire descent.
Route 2
The second off-piste follows route 1 for the first 200 meters and then turns left towards Val Sughet. You descend a steep slope exposed to the north-east, which may be run only after carefully examining the snow conditions. Once you reach the threshold of Val Sughet, you pass by a forest track that, in good snow conditions, can be crossed with skis up to the exit near the Ice palace and the valley station of the chairlift.
