Uphill of the valley of Paularo, the
Chiarsò stream flows on the bottom of a deep gorge, called Forra de Las Callas, visible from a path hollowed out in the overhanging rock. The
Forra de Las Callas is a wonderful example of river erosion, with nearly 200 metre high calcareous rock faces.
In the 1950s works were started (and then interrupted) at the gorge to make a dam. For this reason a hazardous service path, entirely hollowed out in the rock, was created. Today the path allows to walk on the hardest stretch of the valley floor without too many difficulties.
Once local woodsmen used this impassable river route to transport timber downstream.
Near the Forra de Las Callas you will see a monumental specimen of silver fir, called
La Palma (The Palm tree), the trunk of which is divided into six secondary trunks that reach a height of 35 metres.
Activities:
The path De Las Callas is addressed to expert hikers because some parts of it are steep and exposed.
