Rio Chiampeit

A crescendo of fun, with a fantastic 70mt waterfall.
This is the gorge whose last leap is clearly visible from the Udine-Tarvisio highway, nearby Moggio Udinese. The most suggestive part is just the one visible from below, where from a hanging pothole you emerge over the final 70mt leap. The route is usually dry in its first half, but later it receives water from a tributary to the left.

Description

Driving State Road 13 toward Tarvisio, in the vicinity of Moggio Udinese pass under the motorway bridge and keep driving 450mt. Shortly before a curve to the right, take (again to the right) a road that leads to a wide open space just nearby the last waterfall. Alternatively, staying on the SS 13, it is possible to park by said curve to the right, but at the opposite side of the road, in a visible space in front of a commercial activity.
Downstream parking lot coordinates: 46.396856, 13.180961
With two cars available, each with a sufficient height from the ground, it is possible to cut in half the walk by driving up to the Ravorade Stables.
In this case, from the location where the first car is parked, resume the SS 13 towards Tarvisio. About 750mt later, turn right and take a road (asphalt in the first stretch, then dirt) that leads to the Ravorade Stables (elevation 516mt), where you park.
At the Ravorade Stables (by foot or car), locate the track to the Verzan Stables (right side of the road up) and walk it until you reach them (elevation 720mt). From here, easily descend into the creek bed, which in this point still runs in a wide and sunny environment.
The first part is usually dry, so you don’t need to wear the wetsuits until you meet the water.

Pay attention not to dive: Submerged sharp stones
The jump leads directly to the basin before the 70mt last waterfall. There are no problems, in regular hydrological conditions, but the risk is absolutely not to be underestimated in case of sustained flow.
First option:You can rappel down the leap with a single 70mt pitch, but you’ll need long ropes to facilitate the recovery.
11a - MC + C 70 Dx
Second option:the leap can be divided about 20mt later. Once you put your feet on the ledge under the waterfall’s first leap, turn to the (orographic) left, so to reach the small terrace that is located some meters from the vertical.
11b - MC + C 20 Dx
12 - PI + C 45 Sx
Arrive under the motorway viaduct, and to the car in about 5 minutes.
It’s advisable to undertake this itinerary after some days of rain so to find a modicum of sliding even in the high part, though remembering that the first part of the last rappel is made under the waterfall course.
You can also walk the last cliffs only, climbing up the mule track. From a curve, to the left, starts a trail/track toward the brook. Follow it with an open pitch over landslide (fixed ropes) until you reach the bed just downstream the water-carrying tributary (about 45 minutes).
C = rappel equipped point
AN = natural ancorage
MC = handrail
PI = halfway point
DEV = Deviation
DIS = downclimb
TB = toboga
TF = leap
The notation Dx (right) and Sx (left), relative to the rappel points, the handrail, deviations, etc., always indicate the creek orographic bank, where they are positioned. For instance, DEV Sx indicates that the deviation lays on the left bank, and not to the left of the canyoner that will face the deviation.
