The saddle located between the rocks at the base of Creta Cacciatori to the east and a small area of grassy and rocky high ground to the west, the so-called Creta di Casera Vecchia (2285 m), which in turn defines another large grassy saddle, the false passo dei Cacciatori pass, beyond which rise the steep south-eastern rock faces of monte Chiadènis.

The place name derives from its quite ancient use by local hunters on the trail of deer and other game. The pass, which connects the val Fleons and the val Avanza, is now rarely used for this purpose, but instead serves mainly as a transit point for those wishing to reach the forcella delle Genziane and/or the peak of monte Avanza from the Calvi refuge. The remains of shelters just below the pass on the south side, the barbed wire scattered here and there to the north and the positions carved out of the rocks above are evidence of the dramatic events of the First World War. The route, a little uncomfortable but equipped with metal cable for a short section after the Sesis pass, offers beautiful views towards monte Oregone, the border ridge, the val Fleons and Creta Cacciatori.
