At the foot of Pramaggiore

In the heart of the Friulan Dolomites Park

The Pramaggiore range can be considered the Park's most representative, since it's located in the middle area of the Friulan Dolomites and it also holds those peculiarities that distinguish thisprotected area from the others. In other words: Elevated natural and biodiversity degrees due basically to the extremely harsh geomorphological characteristics (deep and narrow valleys, slopes with considerable gaps).
It is a site of primary scientific importance (supranational importance geosite), since it represents a most rare case of "carbonate platform-upper Triassic basin" system preserved in every part, to be used as interpretation of the evolution of a very vast platform such as the Main Dolomite was.

Description:
the track develops along the Val Settimana’s right slope, in a varied and valuable environmental context. it leads to the rangelands’ plateaus, at the foot of the imposing range.
The itinerary starts on a mule track from Ciol de Pes, after the bridge over the creek (about 1Km before the Pussa Refuge). It passes near a beautiful waterfall and then becomes a trail with numerous bends carved into the siliceous limestones (you can notice the dark flint nodules) that run up along the Costa da Nada wood (thermophilic wood characterized by the presence of the hornbeam).

At a fork (elevation 1210mt) (trail 366a), just before Casera Col de Post (open, spartan shelter), abandon to the right the mule track and proceed straight on north along the trail that runs down to the foot of Merie Valley (elevation 1170mt). Cross a creek and then hike up a ridge. After passing a beech wood, and after a short descent, cross Ciol de Pès creek (elevation 1425mt), with a great view on some of its numerous waterfalls.

The deer frequents the beech-and-fir woods of Vitha de Pramaòr that you walked through during the ascent.
Higher up, the beeches-and-firs mixed wood makes gradually room to larches and pines, which in turn thin out in favor of the vast alpine prairies (I Pianons), that frame the Casera Pramaggiore shelter (elevation 1812mt).
After reaching Casera Pramaggiore (open shelter, wide panorama to the south on the imposing elevations of the Caserine – Cornaget range)
From the dairy hut, the route follows CAI 388 roadmark south-west. Hike up and bypass a spur, proceed to the Val del Clap stream (elevation 1861mt) (trough and remains of a furnace for lime). It follows a long transverse route along the hillside, among many pines and some larch. The trail turns left and runs down along the grassy slope (splendid views on the Pramaggiore), then passing into a verdant beeches-and-firs wood that characterized the Crocetta spur. Southward, the decline becomes steeper until Forcella dei Conters (elevation 1547mt). From here along the bottom of a small valley and then down on the northern slope of the wooded Costa Carpegna, you’ll arrive to the intersection with CAI 370 nearby a ford and a stream (1230mt)

From here, take the traila long the hillside toward the bottom of Val Settimana. Pass several brooks and a waterfall before reaching the Val Settimana road, at Ponte del Ciarter (867mt). Hike over about 1Km toward Pussa Ref., and reach the start point.

Access:
Reachable from the Claut built-up area, along the Val Settimana road.
