Mount Matajur and Mountain Huts

Mount Matajur is part of the Mia-Lubia-Matajur anticline, a transition area between the Southern Alps and the Dinarides. The mountain features sedimentary formations ranging from the Lias (Jurassic) to the Upper Cretaceous, deposited between 212 and 65 million years ago. The peak of Mount Matajur, at 1641 meters above sea level, provides a habitat where Alpine, Balkan, and Sub-Mediterranean flora converge and merge. Above 1300 meters, the landscape consists of vast, sparsely grazed grasslands with primary natural herbaceous species and others that emerged after the elimination of the original beech forests.
The asphalt road ends at Rifugio Pelizzo, located at 1280 meters above sea level, inaugurated in July 1975 and named after Senator Guglielmo Pelizzo from Cividale, a fervent supporter of this area. At an altitude of 1545 meters, there is another small hut, Dom na Matajure (House of Matajur), managed by the mountaineering association Planinska družina Benečije and open only on weekends.
At the summit, there is a chapel dedicated to Christ the Redeemer, built in 1957 on the remains of a previous monument from 1901, which was destroyed during the Caporetto retreat. The view from the summit stretches from the Julian Alps to the Adriatic Sea, and birds such as griffon vultures and golden eagles, which are well-established in the Julian Alps, can be spotted.
Accessibility: an asphalt road leads to Rifugio Pelizzo, from where a trail reaches the mountain's summit.
