Hike in one of the most beautiful places in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lago Bordaglia is a "favorite spot", an enchanting alpine lake within the Bordaglia Wildlife Oasis.

This is the classic hike you need to do at least once in your lifetime. It is a bit challenging due to the elevation gain, but it does not include dangerous sections.

The Bordaglia wildlife oasis (established by Regional Council decree in 1968) is characterized by rich vegetation with many varieties of wildflowers and orchids, where capercaillies, marmots, deer, roe deer, and golden eagles live undisturbed. All immersed in a deafening silence, broken only by the pleasant sounds of nature.

Geologically interesting area and First Line of the Front in the First World War.

    Author’s recommendation

At the start, after crossing the bridge over the Rio Fleos and reaching the meadow clearing, instead of taking the old wagon track (CAI trail 141) you can take a variant by following the panoramic route of the Forra del Rio Bordaglia. Head right near the Rio Bordaglia, climb the large boulder with the help of a steel cable. The orange dots on the trees will show you the way to reach several scenic viewpoints and safely admire the canyon carved between rocks and marbles. This route skirts the stream until it rejoins just above the wagon track.

At Malga Bordaglia Bassa, from behind the Don Bosco chapel, it is possible to access (200 m) a machine gun position carved into the rock, where an inscription recalls the passage of Corporal Benito Mussolini in 1916 on this part of the front (beware of uneven trail).

    Safety information

It is advisable to start early to proceed at a calm pace according to your physical fitness.

In the winter/spring months or whenever there is a possibility of snow at altitude, ascend with crampons and/or snowshoes (depending on the snow conditions). In the cold months the lake is frozen and often covered by a thick layer of snow. Before setting out, always check the weather and pay attention to the Avalanche Bulletin.
