Not far from the city centre of Trieste, you can visit the cemetery of Prosecco, one of the most important Austro-Hungarian cemeteries in Italy. Like the one in Aurisina, this cemetery too is located at the end of a karstic sinkhole and can be easily reached on foot from the village centre of Prosecco, walking for about 500 metres along Provincial Road SP1 to Campo Sacro.
To enter the cemetery, you need to climb a few steps on the left before the entrance gate. Inside, a broad avenue leads to the tombs of the Austro-Hungarian soldiers who fell on the Karst around Trieste and Gorizia. Here are the remains of 5050 soldiers, including 1369 from the former cemetery of Doberdò del Lago, 1103 from the cemetery of Piedimonte (Mt. Calvario) and 679 from other areas nearby.
When reading their names on the crosses, you can easily understand that the Austro-Hungarian Army comprised people from different nationalities: their surnames come from Germany, the Balkan area, Hungary, Poland and Italy too, as the Austro-Hungarian Empire included also Venezia Giulia and Istria, where several Italian families used to live.
