War and History Museum of Palmanova

The War and History Museum of Palmanova was inaugurated by the Ministry of Defence in 1990 and offers an opportunity to discover the history of this charming small town located in the Friulian plain. The museum does not revolve only around the Great War but covers a wider span of time, starting from the year of Palmanova's foundation (1593) until the present day. It is a fascinating journey through the history of this small fort town, considered by many experts an authentic jewel of military architecture and design.

The Museum is divided into three areas: the Palace of the Army Governor, the external fortifications and, finally, Cividale Gate. In the first area, you can see some remains linking the town to surrounding areas, while the second room allows observing Palmanova's main defensive features, such as the Gate, the bulwark (an embankment with firearms pits) and the "Napoleonic lunette", that is the third fortified line built during the French occupation in the early nineteenth century.

Finally, in the upper part of Cividale Gate, on the donjon (the fortified main tower), you can access a room where firearms, war memorabilia, uniforms and documents related to the military history of Palmanova are displayed. They date from the Venetian era (1593-1797) to the Italian period (starting 1866), passing through the French and Austrian occupations. A section is specifically dedicated to the Great War, when the town, which was part of the rear line, would accommodate hospitals, warehouses and training camps for troops until October 1917.
