Torreano

The territory of Torreano, both flat and mountainous, is home to a population of Friulian origin in the valley and Slovenian in the mountains, based on an ancient coexistence of people with different but complementary origins and customs.
This area has been inhabited since the Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Ages, as evidenced by the Foràn di Landri cave, located above the village of Prestento. The artifacts found there testify to the presence of humans in prehistoric times.
The main settlement, as well as its toponym, dates back to the Romanization of Friuli: the name seems to derive from the Roman centurion Turius, who is believed to have received this presidium. Supporting this theory are significant archaeological finds, now housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Cividale.
In addition to the characteristic votive chapels of Saints Ermacora and Fortunato, and Saint Mauro, the rural architecture in the villages of Costa, Reant, and Masarolis is noteworthy, while the villages in the plains are characterized by the presence of important noble buildings, some dating back to medieval times, such as Villa Maisano, and others more recent, like the complex of Villa Volpe Pasini, with its 17th-century design.
