San Pietro al Natisone

San Pietro al Natisone is considered the main town of the Natisone Valleys. It is located at the beginning of the valley that leads to the border with Slovenia, followed by the municipality of Pulfero.
The area is rich in history, as demonstrated by the ancient evidence of the Vernasso underwater landslide dating back to the Eocene, human traces discovered in the village of Biarzo (where artifacts from the Upper Paleolithic and Neolithic were found), and the remains of an ancient Roman bridge over the Natisone, identified near San Quirino.
The votive chapels that populate the small villages of San Quirino, Clenia, Tiglio, and Sorzento are particularly evocative. In Sorzento, there are also well-preserved examples of rural architecture, featuring characteristic stone and wood buildings.
Other important medieval traces can be found at the stone staircase in Azzida and the fortified hill of Monte Barda.
Extensive documentation on the traditions of the valleys is preserved at SMO (Slovensko multimedialno okno), the multimedia museum of landscapes and stories dedicated to the Slovenian minority in Italy.
The territory of San Pietro al Natisone was also crossed by our troops during the retreat following the defeat at Caporetto. Today, the area offers numerous, well-maintained routes for Mountain Biking and E-biking.
