Prepotto is a hilly municipality with a history inseparably linked to that of Castelmonte, the Marian sanctuary of Roman origin, later transformed into a fortified village, now part of the "Way of the Sacred Mountains," a cross-border tourist project stretching along the Italy-Slovenia border.
The site of the medieval Mels Castle in Altana is significant, as are the cultural testimonies of the votive chapels dedicated to Saints Hermagoras and Fortunatus, Saint Peter the Apostle, the Three Kings, or Saint Thomas, located in the picturesque villages of Cialla, Chiazzacco, Prepotischis, Centa, or Breda. These villages have preserved many examples of traditional rural stone buildings with wooden balconies.
In this valley today, many of the meadows once used for grazing have been converted to vineyards, with particular emphasis on the production of Schioppettino wine.
