The Apulian pizzica in Givigliana

In a village in the deep Carnia, in the upper Val Degano in the province of Udine, in October one of the most original events taking place in Friuli Venezia Giulia finds its climax and is well worth attending.

Indeed, in Givigliana, a small hamlet in the municipality of Rigolato, hosts the main phase of the SPONTANEOUS SONG FESTIVAL (with 15th edition in 2019), an event that aims at reviving the forms of singing born from time immemorial but never framed in any music school.

And in such an evocative place, where there are just 11 inhabitants, entering the church you can hear, for example, the sound of the Salento tambourine and songs of devotion to the Madonna with rhythms and words that are typical of the “Pizzica Pugliese” (Apulian Pizzica).
This mash up of images and sounds would seem strange, but when inside you find everything to be very natural and you let yourself be enraptured by the sensations that the place and both human and natural sounds transmit to you in an environment that stops the running of time for a while.

In Givigliana (Gjviano in the local dialect), musicologist Don Gilberto Pressacco led in the 70s a first small research group investigating the origins of oral tradition singing in Friuli Venezia Giulia, finding them in the patriarch liturgy of the Church of Aquileia at the time of early Christianity.
It is worth climbing to 1270 meters above sea level to spend a few moments in a timeless setting.

Where to stay

Alessandro Bonfanti

I love videos and I want to tell you about the territory I live in. I am convinced that its cross-border nature is and will be fundamental to the inhabitants of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. I am proud to live in a region with the right dimensions and in one that is still suitable for men, women and children.
