Description

Welcome to the Gorizia Synagogue, the oldest Jewish place of worship in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region and a symbol of the history of Gorizia's Jewish community.
The Jewish presence in Gorizia has been documented since the 14th century and flourished under Habsburg rule, when the city became an important commercial and cultural centre. Between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the Jewish ghetto was established in the San Giovanni district, where the community's first prayer hall was built and later developed into the present-day synagogue.
For centuries, this building was the religious, cultural and social heart of the Jewish community of Gorizia, which gave birth to prominent scholars and intellectuals, earning the city the nickname "Little Jerusalem on the Isonzo".
Today, the synagogue preserves the memory of a centuries-old history, marked by periods of prosperity as well as by the tragedy of the Holocaust. Visiting this place means discovering an essential part of the historical and cultural heritage of Gorizia and its surrounding area.
