The monument, standing in the area of Basovizza in the direction of the mountain pass of Pesek, was erected to
commemorate four Slovenian anti-fascists who were who were put to death by firing squad in 1930.
Ferdo Bidovec, Alojzij Valenčič, Fran Marušič and Zvonimir Miloš organised and carried out an attack on the fascist newspaper
"il Popolo di Trieste". One person was killed and three others were wounded. The four men were executed and became
symbols of the Slovenian anti-fascist resistance.
The monument was erected at the behest of local Slovenian associations to honour and preserve the memory of the four fallen soldiers.
Commemorative ceremonies are held at this site every year.
The nearby
Astronomical Observatory of Basovizza is immersed in the greenery of Monte Cocusso, with easy paths that allow visitors to experience the true essence of the Karst, surrounded by smoke trees and karst rocks.
