The
Quarries of Aurisina, which have a history of more than 2000 years, are located in the Karst Geopark.
The origins of the ancient Aurisina quarry date back to the
Roman Imperial period and continue with the
Austro-Hungarian Empire and
Her Royal Highness Irene of Savoy, Duchess of Aosta. In 1947 the area was purchased by
Giuseppe Sonzogno.
The stone extracted from the quarries, known historically and commercially as
"Karst marble", is not only a geological heritage of the territory but also an excellent material for ornamental and building applications.
It has been scientifically proven that the stone extracted from the quarries was used extensively in the construction of the city of
Aquileia between the 1st century B.C. and the 5th century A.D., as well as in several palaces in
Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Munich and, of course,
Trieste.
The route runs along dirt tracks and has a slight gradient. It is therefore very accessible for people wearing closed, non-slip shoes, but not recommended for prams and pushchairs.
The guided tour is organised by Estplore and Marco Manzoni in cooperation with Zenith C (the concession holder of the mining site). It can be booked by contacting the
infopoint of the town of Sistiana.
