Mount San Leonardo

Not far from the village of Samatorza is the small Mount San Leonardo, which reaches a height of about 400 metres and offers an exceptional 360° view of the Gulf of Trieste.

The peak of the mountain can be reached along several paths, including the very wide and easy CAI Trail n. 10. Along the way, visitors can admire the remains of a small church that was destroyed during the First World War and an ancient, fortified settlement, known with the term Castelliere which probably dates back to the Bronze Age.

The landscape features typical karst terrain with limestone rocks, scree, dolines, scrubland and undergrowth and, with a bit of luck, you may come across a hare or roe deer.

There are also several caves in the area, such as the Cave of San Leonardo, the Cave of Ternovizza and the Blue Cave of Samatorza.

Mount San Leonardo is one of the stops on the High Karst Route (CAI Trail n. 3), which is 13 kilometres long and also crosses Mount Lanaro and the village of Repen.
