An old narrow-gauge railway, which was similar to a tram, connected Udine to San Daniele del Friuli from 1889 to 1955. This was an important connection route, both for people and for the local economy, including during the two World Wars. It was discontinued at the time of the great expansion of motorised road transport. For a long time, the railway track remained in disuse, partly buried by the expansion of the city of Udine and forgotten. Today, you can retrace much of the route by bicycle towards San Daniele and taste a slice of delicious prosciutto crudo.

Although it has not been upgraded by specific renovation projects, the former railway section between Udine and Fagagna has been partly repurposed as a bicycle path. Starting from the railway station, the route can be followed along the city streets on urban cycle paths to the village of Chiavris. The suburbs of Udine are crossed, partially on the route, as far as Colugna and then on to Ceresetto and Martignacco. Some place names of streets and areas recall where the stations of the little train used to be. After Martignacco we continue on the cycle path to Ciconicco di Fagagna on the old railway line. We move away from it when we arrive in Fagagna, where we opt for a new cycle path from S. Giovanni in Colle to Rive d'Arcano: in the municipal public gardens of the latter village, we can see one of the steam locomotives that used to run on the railway. Arriving in Giavons, we are in sight of San Daniele. The final station of the railway is now in the Civil Hospital car park: to reach the old town centre we have to do some uphill climbing!
