From Udine, after cycling along the city's cycle tracks as far as Cormor Park, we climb the FVG 1 Alpe Adria cycle track to Vendoglio, in the heart of the Morainic Hills. The first castle you will encounter is the largest and best known in Friuli, the castle of Colloredo di Monte Albano. The noble family was among the most important of the Patriarchate of Aquileia from which many commanders of arms, high prelates and distinguished dignitaries played a significant role in the German Empire. The castle of Caporiacco, which was completely rebuilt after the 1976 earthquake, can only be visited from the outside, as it is still privately owned. Just before Fagagna, there is La Brunelde, a manor house of ancient architecture, very close to the Quadri Nature Oasis, a point of rest and also a breeding ground for storks. Once in Fagagna, you can climb with a bit of effort to the large ruins of the castle of the same name, from which you can enjoy a wide panorama stretching as far as the Friulian mountains. The beautiful castle of Villalta, the protagonist of many events in the history of Friuli, towers at the base of the hills and can only be visited on specific days. The route moves past the castle of Moruzzo and into Santa Margherita del Gruagno, a small fortified village. We are now close to Udine and we return there along the FVG 1 cycle track.
Author’s recommendation
Route type: hilly itinerary, a bit demanding due to the length and various ups and downs. Entirely on paved roads, a large part takes place on low-traffic roads, the remainder on a cycle path. It can be tackled by slightly trained people with bicycles equipped with gears.
