This itinerary circles the base of Mount S. Simeone: it is remembered as the epicentre of the earthquake that devastated Friuli in 1976. In fact, it travels through or close to some of the towns that were most affected by that terrible tragedy: Venzone, Cavazzo Carnico, Somplago, Alesso, Bordano... Visitors will witness how those territories have re-emerged from the rubble, but also how the seismic event has radically altered their character, erasing traditional architecture dating back centuries. Starting from Venzone, cross the Tagliamento and head north along the old military road. In the vicinity of Cavazzo Carnico, continue over a ridge and descend to Lake Cavazzo or Lago dei Tre Comuni (Lake of three Municipalities): this is the largest natural body of water in Friuli and a popular bathing area in summer. Keep to the right bank of the lake and you will reach Alesso. Continuing around Mount S. Simeone, pass through Braulins and Bordano, the famous village of butterflies, and return to Venzone by way of Pioverno.
