A true cross-border ride through history along the Soča river.
The starting point of this route is the city of Gorizia, which together with Nova Gorica (SLO), will be the European Capital of Culture in 2025. Cycling between the two cities allows one to observe architectural and cultural differences that only a borderland can offer. This route follows the Soča river from above, a pleasant place for its crystal-clear waters. This valley is best known for the events of the First World War, events that have inextricably characterised the history of this area. The cycling route passes through small villages overlooked by mountains that were the scene of bloody battles, most notably Mount Sabotino, which at 609m dominates the Isonzo plain. Once in Kanal ob Soči (Soča Canal), it is impossible not to photograph the reflections of the village reflected in the green waters of the river.
You can also start cycling from Kanal ob Soči. In this case, the route will be almost all slightly downhill.

Route doable year-round, possible wind gusts during colder months.
Do you want to take a DEVIATION along your route? From the Bridge of Salcano you can connect to the Collio/Brda loop (R014), among vineyards and wineries where you can taste the area's DOC wines. For those with a sweet tooth, it's worth a stop at some of the local taverns/hostelries.
