The starting point of this route is the city of Gorizia which together with Nova Gorica (SLO), will be European Capital of Culture in 2025. Riding between the two cities allows you to observe architectural and cultural differences that only a borderland can offer. This itinerary runs along the high banks of the Isonzo river, a pleasant place because of its crystalline waters. This valley is mainly known for events linked to the First World War, events that have indelibly marked the history of this territory. The cycling itinerary crosses small villages overlooked by mountains that were the theatre of bloody battles, notably Monte Sabotino which at 609 m dominates the Isonzo plain. Once you arrive in Kanal ob Soči (Isonzo Canal) it is impossible not to photograph the reflections of the village mirrored in the green waters of the river. It is possible to return to Gorizia by train.
Author’s recommendation
You can start riding from Kanal ob Soči, it will be almost all slightly downhill. The route is suitable for families with children aged 10 and over.

Do you want to make a DETOUR along your route? From the Salcano Bridge you can connect to the Collio / Brda ring (R014), among vineyards and wineries where you can taste the DOC wines of the area. For those with a sweet tooth, stopping at some local tavern/gostilna is worth it.
