Biarzo - Prehistoric Shelter

The prehistoric settlement of Biarzo features a cavity or rock shelter located along the Natisone River near the hamlet of Biarzo, in the Quaternary rock layers. Discovered in 1976, an archaeological survey in 1982 revealed the site's occupation phases pertinent to the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods.
Various types of artefacts and stone tools have been found, such as scrapers, tips, blades, and some fragments of rock crystal indicating the processing of this particular material, an awl, and a perforated sea shell (Columbella). Mesolithic finds include more types of scrapers, a segment of circle, triangular and trapezoidal shaped blades, and many perforated sea shells adapted as pendants. Ceramic materials feature oblique fingernail decorations in double rows, with fragments of keeled cups and a square-mouthed vase. Notably, a worked deer antler harpoon was found, likely used for fishing or perhaps hunting.
