In the captivating setting of the Salone degli Incanti, the Municipality of Trieste, PromoturismoFVG and Madeinart have dedicated an extraordinary exhibition to one of the most popular, controversial, and mysterious artists on the contemporary scene.
His art made its first appearance on the walls of urban environments, and was then picked up and popularised by the media, particularly the web-based ones.
This major exhibition uncovers a fundamental yet under-analysed dimension that holds the key to a more accurate understanding of this street artist, especially in light of the far from secondary role it played in the constant and unstoppable growth of Banksy’s success: his gift as a great communicator.
His works are messages in their purest form. Ultimately, what matters to Banksy ahead of the form is the message; despite this, at a formal level, he has managed to create an immediately recognisable, cross-cultural personal language.
These themes will be highlighted by the body of work on display at the exhibition, showcasing pieces from both Italian and international collections (including some extraordinarily striking large paintings), which have been grouped according to genres and subject-matters. Each of these helps equip visitors with the tools needed to unlock the meaning and significance of Banksy's work and features useful educational devices designed to explore the general topics covered in each exhibition section and each individual artwork.
The exhibition will be complemented by hundreds of objects, photographs, and memorabilia. Video works by Banksy will be telling the story of his roots and inspirations, in other words, those "movements that have used a form of visual protest through a fusion of words and images and with an attitude towards action, to which Banksy explicitly refers to by way of expression or elective affinities.”
The exhibition will also feature a multimedia installation showcasing the murals that Banksy has created around the world.
