The Moscarda Tower “La Torate”

In the But Valley, near Paluzza, stands the Moscarda Tower, also called "La Torate" by the local community: it is an ancient bulwark of a complex defence-customs system consisting of two towers located on opposite banks of the Bût stream (the one on the right bank was destroyed in 1840).
The two towers were erected here because it is the point where the valley becomes narrower and therefore the easiest place to block the consular road leading to the Mount Croce Carnico mountain pass, an important crossing point in use since ancient times.
The fortress was built in the mid-1200s and is just over 10 metres high. It has a square base and three windows in the walls and an arched vault door on the first floor. Once the summit is reached, the view unfolds over the valley and the surrounding peaks.
Today, visitors can reach the tower by following two paths, one to the east and the other to the north, along which they will encounter various military works, such as trenches, shelters and military posts dating back to the First and Second World Wars.
Repeatedly remodelled, in 1993 the Tower underwent extensive restoration and became the site of the Museum of the Territory featuring an adjoining botanical garden.
