Nestled in the unspoiled nature of the Friulian mountains, the Polse di Cougnes Astronomical Observatory is an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic experience among starry skies, silence and discovery. Located within the Ecumenical Centre for Hospitality, Culture and Spirituality, just a short walk from the historic Church of San Pietro, it is a place where science, nature and contemplation come together.
Thanks to its location far from light pollution, the observatory offers excellent conditions for stargazing, making it especially suitable for families with children who wish to discover astronomy in an engaging and accessible way. Activities are designed to spark curiosity in younger visitors through educational tools, multimedia content and interactive experiences that turn a visit into both a fun and learning opportunity.
The facility features a modern motorised stainless steel dome and houses a Ritchey-Chrétien telescope, one of the largest in Italy, alongside a Newtonian reflector and a Galilean refractor, all mounted on a fork equatorial mount for high-precision observations. Since March 2022, the observatory has been officially recognised by the Minor Planet Center, the international authority responsible for the study and cataloguing of asteroids and comets.
Throughout the year, with a richer programme during the summer months, the observatory opens to the public for astronomical events, observation nights and educational talks. Activities also take place in the spacious Aula Magna provided by the Polse di Cougnes Foundation, which allows the hosting of groups, families and visitors interested in learning more about astronomy through conferences and outreach events.
The observatory is managed by the Polse di Cougnes Astronomical Group ODV, a volunteer association dedicated to scientific outreach and astronomical research.
