Civic Museum of the Treasure of Grado

A journey through the history and spirituality of the lagoon town

The Civic Museum of the Treasure of Grado is dedicated to Monsignor Sebastiano Tognon, parish priest of the town from 1913 to 1956. During the First World War he courageously defended the Basilica’s Treasure, even risking his life to protect its precious artefacts.

Inside the museum, dozens of objects tell the story of nearly two thousand years of Grado’s history, from the 2nd to the 18th century AD. The exhibition route allows visitors to discover artefacts of great historical and religious value, some of which are displayed to the public for the first time.

Among the most significant pieces are the finds discovered during the excavations carried out in the Basilica of Sant’Eufemia in 1871, including two silver reliquary caskets containing the relics of the Aquileian martyrs and the precious fragment of the True Cross, donated in 630 AD by the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius to the Patriarch of Grado.

A visit to the museum offers a genuine journey into the history, faith and traditions of Grado. The exhibition tells the story of the deep connection between the local community and the Basilica of Sant’Eufemia, giving visitors an insight into the culture and everyday life of one of the most fascinating lagoon towns of the Upper Adriatic.
