Gorizia. Slow Tourism Tour: castle village, a crossroads of peoples and cultures

The magic of the castle Village

The first route begins in Piazza Vittoria, the elegant heart of Gorizia, and winds its way through historic streets such as Via Rastello and Via Cocevia, places rich in memories of the Habsburg past and the presence of the Jewish community. From Piazza Sant’Antonio, the route continues towards the hill, and the atmosphere gradually changes: traffic gives way to silence and greenery, as visitors make a gentle ascent towards the castle.
The second route starts from Via Giustiniani and reaches the Castle via a peaceful path immersed in nature. This walk offers an engaging outdoor experience, surrounded by wildlife, restorative tranquillity and spectacular views that open out over the town and the surrounding landscape.
Within the medieval village, among historic gateways, ancient buildings and the Church of the Holy Spirit, centuries of history unfold. The route culminates along the castle ramparts, offering sweeping views over the town and the surrounding landscape, and providing an experience that brings together history, scenery and local identity.
Upon reaching the imposing Gorizia Castle, visitors should not miss the opportunity to explore its evocative interior spaces, which preserve important testimonies to Gorizia’s history and offer insight into the strategic and political role the fortress has played over the centuries. The visit thus completes an itinerary that leads visitors from the town’s elegant squares to its oldest and most symbolic heart.
The visit is further enriched by two excellent themed museums: one dedicated to the First World War and the other to Fashion and the applied arts.

Total elevation gain: approximately 50–60 metres.
Please note: this route is not suitable for visitors with mobility impairments.
