At Russiz Superiore, traces left 50 million years ago by skilled marine builders survive. This fossiliferous geosite will take you back in time, introducing you to a rather unusual landscape compared to the vineyards we are used to.

The route starts from the camper parking lot of the Subida riding school in Cormons. After an initial uphill section (20% gradient on a natural surface that is uneven in places) crossing a forest of chestnut, oak and manna ash trees, we arrive at the crime of the hill cultivated with vineyards.

Here at the crossroads, we will go left and after walking a flat section between vineyards (from this point it is possible to take the detour that connects to the route in the Preval Plain) we arrive at another wooded section, at the end of which the view opens up completely.

We are on the Russiz Superiore hill in Capriva del Friuli, which preserves a small but very rich regional geo-site with traces of an ancient reef. We continue to the left to reach the heart of the geo-site, namely the monolith, indicated by cypress trees and a special illustrative panel

The route between vineyards and olive groves is very scenic, sweeping from the villages of Slovenian Brda to the foothills of the Alps and Julian Alps.

    Author’s recommendation

Along the way it is possible to stop at the Russiz Superiore Farm for a tasting of the wines grown among the fossils and to visit the historic winery.
