Mount Ragogna, a modest elevation northwest of San Daniele, has considerablehistorical importance despite its altitude of only 512 meters. This hill of morainic origins forces the Tagliamento River to form a significant bend before continuing to the plains and the Adriatic Sea, and it witnessed war events during World War I. The re-enactment of these events led to the establishment of the Great War Museum in Ragogna, accompanied by a historical trail that connects the most significant points from San Pietro to Muris.
Along this path one can explore numerous historical remains, such as the permanent Battery "Ragogna Bassa," the casemates with soldiers' inscriptions, and the Battery "Ragogna Alta" located at 482 m above sea level, next to the armored powder magazines and the Cavallino Fort. Continuing on, one can observe the second-line trenches and reach the strongholds of the Cret dal Louf and the Spice, thus enriching the visit with important evidence of military history. In this context, Mount Ragogna is not just a hill to explore, but a place that invites reflection on the memory and sacrifice of those who fought there.
Author’s recommendation
All along the way there are numerous and detailed posters regarding the historical events of the place, it is recommended to read them to learn more about a page of history unknown to most people. On summer weekends the Ragogna castle can be visited and guided tours are possible with prior reservation.
