Easy loop route that, through woods and meadows, leads to two summits with spectacular views over the Val Tagliamento and the Tolmezzo basin.
The Curiedi basin, in the municipality of Tolmezzo, is a unique place from the natural and agricultural traditions perspective of Carnia. This loop route allows you to appreciate the natural aspects of these ridges where lush beech woods caress the wet areas called peat bogs, formed after the melting of the Wurmian glaciers (last glaciation). The route first ascends to the summit of Mt. Dobis at 1029m and then to that of Cuel Maior at 1011m, following well-trodden and perfectly marked trails (white-green markers) established for the Tolmezzo Alpine City 2017 event.
The places crossed and the still inhabited agricultural buildings encountered are steeped in the magic of customs that are gradually disappearing. Agricultural, pastoral, and forestry traditions, the ancient heritage of Carnia.
A route that lends itself, due to its short length, to enjoy the sunset from two exceptional panoramic viewpoints.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
There are no water sources along the route.
The itinerary is fully marked with white-green dots and directional signs.
The trail network created by the CAI of Tolmezzo during Tolmezzo Alpine City 2017 can be viewed and downloaded on the club’s website. The publication is titled "From 200 to 2000m" and offers interesting hiking ideas in the Tolmezzo basin.
From the sports field parking lot, head downhill towards Fusea, passing open spaces and a short stretch of forest. At a votive ancona along a bend in the road, the trail enters the northern slope of Dobis. From the summit, now continuing southward, you descend to a wide wooded saddle after a steeper section. In the forest, follow the obvious trail which, with some switchbacks, leads to the meadows of the stavoli Dintion. Upon reaching the asphalt, proceed left for about fifty meters to return to a trail that climbs towards Cuel Maior through the woods. At the next three-way junction, keep left to reach the summit of Cuel Maior. Continuing along the trail (heading north), descend through the forest to return to the previous junction. The loop closes by keeping left (along the route, signs indicate the Curiedi peat bog) reaching a large meadow with some stavoli. Climbing a partially paved road for about thirty meters of elevation gain, you reach the road connecting Curiedi to Buttea, and you just proceed downhill to the right to return to the starting point.
The local public transport service provides transportation up to the hamlet of Fusea, about 30 minutes walking from the hike.
From the hamlet of Caneva, in Tolmezzo, continue towards Zuglio. After a tunnel, before reaching the village of Casanova, turn left onto the road that climbs to the village of Fusea and, maintaining the same direction, continue climbing to the Curiedi plateau where the sports field is reached on the left.
