The ascent to Monte Cuar offers views spanning the entire region; it is one of the last summits of the Carnic Prealps chain before the Friulian plain. From the panoramic summit you can admire the peaks of the Friulian Dolomites to the west, the Verzegnis and Carnic ranges to the north, then turning your gaze eastwards gradually meeting the Julian Alps and the Prealps with Monte San Simeone overlooking Lake Cavazzo and Cuarnan overlooking Gemona along with Chiampon and Plauris. To the south you can admire the beauty of the Friulian plain preceded by the gentle shapes of the moraine hills and the view extends to the sea. The statue of the Madonna towers over the summit and welcomes visitors with its majestic presence. Next to it is the summit book, where hikers can leave a message or dedication. Not far away, the bell dedicated to the victims of the Friuli earthquake rings in the wind, commemorating those who lost their lives in that tragic event.
In the surrounding area, you can still see traces of military communication routes, meant as a fallback defensive line on the plateau between Monte Cuar and Monte Flagjel. These silent roads are witnesses of a tumultuous past and defensive strategies that now rest peacefully together with the surrounding nature.
Author’s recommendation
Once the hike is completed it is possible to continue along the road returning through the Monte Prat plateau and descending to Cornino (UD).

Safety information
Hiking is not recommended in uncertain weather (the upper part is exposed to lightning and the steep terrain can become very slippery with rain). In case of icy terrain, use the correct equipment.
Along the loop there are no water sources; on particularly hot days consider carrying a sufficient amount of water.
Tips and suggestions
For less experienced hikers and smaller children it is advisable to walk the route in the opposite direction, thus ensuring the possibility to reach, without steep slopes, primarily the summit of Monte Cuar and return along the same route.
Roadbook
From La Forcje take the CAI 816 path which rises steeply among the pines. After a first short climb, the path reconnects to the road at the height of a bench. Continuing for about 300 m you reach the point where the path restarts uphill, leaving the dirt road. Continue along the ridge line, rising quickly through beeches and pastures until you reach the summit with a cross and bell (1478 m). The descent continues along the ridge line heading west on the obvious CAI 815 path until you reach the saddle above Malga Cuar whose pastures are fenced with a wooden railing. Cutting north directly above the Malga, you reach it following the existing path traces and then descend following the signage and return to the dirt road. To reach the paved road more quickly, take the path that penetrates the beech forest near the end of the route, otherwise continue along the dirt road.
