A long hike along the La Bernadia ridge, among the remains of the First World War, extensive views over the Friulian plain, caves, and silent villages
The long loop route, intended for trained hikers, starts from the small village of Sedilis, in the municipality of Tarcento.
The first part of the route climbs the southern slopes of the La Bernadia plateau, with several scenic views over the Tarcento hills and the Friulian plain. Interesting are the remains of the buildings dating back to the First World War found on M. Pocivalo and M. Lonza where the lighthouse dedicated to the Julia Alpine Brigade stands, inseparably linked to Friuli Venezia Giulia. The entire route runs among sinkholes and karst phenomena of undeniable natural interest and the incredible chamber of the Abisso Vigant, which can be visited in the second part of the route, is an example of this truly incredible underground world (the first part of this huge chamber is accessible via an easy path).
On the way back down, two silent villages are crossed, spaces where man and nature have coexisted since ancient times.
Route always clear with white-red markers, in the second part marked with the letter "D".
The route can be interrupted at the M. Lonza fort, returning to the starting point along the paved road that leads, with 5 hairpin bends, to the church of Sedilis.

Clear and always well-marked route. The steepness of the first path section suggests avoiding it in case of rain or high ground humidity.
Check in advance at the Villanova Caves Visitor Center for the actual opening of the refreshment point in case of a planned gastronomic stop.
From the square at the bell tower of Sedilis, where parking is possible next to the paved road that leads to the Julia lighthouse and the fort, a cement road leads to the climb on the southern slope of M. Pocivalo. Shortly after, the cement road becomes a path climbing rather steeply the slope among bushes and small clearings, passing the remains of some isolated buildings. After a strenuous stretch, near two rustic buildings, continue between them to reach the paved road at a short distance. Now go right for a short asphalt stretch and then follow the dirt road which, always on the right, leads with gentler slopes among the karst plateaus of M. Pocivalo, passing 2 First World War buildings, finally reaching the mountain cannon battery at the summit of Pocivalo (792m). At the end of the loop, the return path arrives exactly at this point.
Continuing northwest, we now head to the Bernadia fort and Mount Lonza, passing through a continuous up-and-down area rich in sinkholes and rocks eroded by weather. The path leads to the wide square of the fort. Resuming the walk, we now descend towards Villanova delle Grotte following the paved road that starts right next to the fort and, followed for a long time with a gentle constant descent, leads to the houses of this small village.
Once reached the village, turn right along a road that will take you through the center of the village, reaching a paved path under the bell tower turning right, equipped with street lamps. This path leads to the square of the Villanova Caves Visitor Center.
Resuming the path, still descending, now aim for the village of Vigant, traveling a very little trafficked paved road, surrounded by woods in this area. At the sign indicating the Abisso Vigant, descend along a path near the modest stream and follow it up to the stone portal of the Vigant abyss.
Continuing beyond the wooden bridge and following the white-red markers (route D), you travel a long stretch of trail climbing steadily the slope up to the settlement of Borgo di Mezzo. From the village, exit along the paved road now descending again, turning right shortly after for the uninhabited bordo di Tamar, where near the last house the route becomes a path again and climbs now more steeply the woods of M. Pocivalo leading back to the aforementioned cannon battery.
From the Pocivalo cannon battery, return to the starting point along the same route taken on the outward journey.
From the center of Tarcento, at the roundabout, follow Viale Olinto Marinelli to the left with signs for the upper Val Torre. After crossing the Torre River, continue straight at the next stop (signs for the Plan di Paluz trattoria) and, maintaining the main direction, climb the hills up to the bell tower of Sedilis.
