Once upon a time there was an ogre who enjoyed terrorising the inhabitants of Val Raccolana. His name was Goriuda. He lived in a cave near a waterfall called Cascata del Sole. We find ourselves in theParco naturale delle Prealpi Giulie(Julian foothills nature reserve) near the village of Chiusaforte, just a few kilometres from Sella Nevea, a place dear to skiers. Every time I pass these parts, I never fail to visit the house of Goriuda.
Let’s go and have a look... After parking the car near Pian della Sega, we can immediately notice the signs for a very short and easy path, which in less than 10 minutes takes us to the waterfall (editor’s note: there are also longer trekking routes on the mythical Fontanon).
The best time to come here, in my opinion, is the end of spring, when Monte Canin is still full of snow which, melting slowly, makes the waterfall truly spectacular with its maximum water flow. But in all seasons this place can offer unforgettable panoramas. Colours, light and landscape change, and every time it seems like the first!
