The great war in Pontebba: Villa Furchterlich and Hubertusheim

Today I want to talk about an important project that will be implemented in Pontebba, in the Great War theme park called Bombaschgraben. Described in a previous articolo last year, it increased in size on 2 July 2017 with the inauguration of new lots. In the first of the two, located north of the rest of the trail, it is possible to see a small cave used as a shelter for the commander of the 149th Landsturm (territorial) regiment and the level of what was most probably his hut. In the second of the two lots it is possible to visit another small cave used as a shelter by the infantry and the shelf of the patrol barracks, or the meeting and departure point of soldiers heading to the village of Pontafel in order to obtain information about the enemy and capture prisoners. Less than a hundred metres further ahead we find a spring made by 149th Landsturm which bears the phrase in German “You spring, cast by a warrior’s hand, quench the thirst of the traveller in the land of Carinthia”. The trail goes downhill towards the Bombaso stream in the direction of Pontebba in what was once the old road to Passo Pramollo and, if you want, you can walk to the town or return to the main car park by going through the theme park. The new project will involve various associations, public bodies and individuals. The two barracks/shelters of the Austrian infantry present in the old lot of the theme park under a large rock face will be rebuilt. In particular, the “Villa Furchterlich” and the “Hubertusheim” will be built: two small shacks of wood and tar paper that, like many others, were the main shelters for millions of soldiers in the Great War. Rebuilt using photographs of the time and financed with the contribution of private individuals and the Municipality of Pontebba, they will allow visitors to observe in every detail the daily living conditions of the infantrymen and artillerymen of the glorious 7th Khevenhuller regiment, the 4th infantry and 149th Landsturm, all regiments that faced the Italian 134th Benevento infantry regiment, the 6th Bersaglieri and 8th Alpini regiments along with many others that fought on these mountains. The interiors of these huts will contain furnishings and photographs made as faithfully as possible to the period so as to impress visitors all the more as to the conditions. Moreover, within one of the two shelters, a descriptive panel will be placed dedicated to Christmas at the front passed by a soldier during the Great War and a soldier of the Naja in addition to images of the era. The work will require a great physical effort of the various volunteers who have already made themselves available for free. Now you can follow us on our Facebook page “Quello che le montagne restituiscono” and visit the new huts and the entire valley.
