In the sea of intimacy. Underwater archaeology reveals the history of the Adriatic

Enchantment is the right word for this exhibition in Trieste. The Centro Espositivo d'Arte Monderna e Contemporanea, a former fish market called Salone degli Incanti (enchantment again!) offers us the opportunity to rediscover our maritime past until 1 May 2018, from model boats to a host of different curiosities that make up its history. I discovered a extraordinary new world, made of finds with underwater archaeologists as witnesses of antiquity: here I discovered the construction of the first boats, ancient finds and surprising evidence adding to what we know of the area today.

And this is how I define this visit – surprising – an exhibition in which stories of men and trade intertwine, where the objects are precious not just for what they are but also for what they say about us, and I discover a fortune hidden beneath the sea. Whether you are a child or adult the Adriatic Sea and its history is fascinating, and this exhibition is set up in a really special way: from the entrance where a friendly diver with a red hat welcomes you, to the representation of the Adriatic Sea with its typical boats, and the backdrop into which you ‘dive’, observing materials and customs I never knew of. In the depths of an intimate Adriatic sea but with greatness worth discovering.
