It's Sunday morning, a classic autumn day in November and while I head towards Sella Nevea for a mountain walk with my trusty furry friend, Duke, I decide to stop at the most beautiful and highest waterfall in Val Raccolana, the Fontanone di Goriuda.
I park at Pian della Sega near a trattoria, where I see a friendly pony trotting in the meadow in front of the small trout pond. I immediately let Duke out, who does not waste a second before jumping into the water of the stream to stretch his legs and have a drink.
I can already note the waterfall, which is short of water given the dry summer that has just passed, but already visibile in all its beauty.
We head down the asphalt road for a hundred metres and leaving the restaurant behind us, we immediately find the start of the trail to the waterfall well marked by signs.
On the way we meet a group of other people and children, probably a family with their children and dogs, who are returning to their car. We continue along the path and in a few minutes, about ten in all, we come to the waterfall, near the pool that has formed at its foot. I take some photos and we head off to walk around the pool and immediately become wet with the droplets of water cascading over us. The natural indentation in the rock is very appealing as it allows us to hide behind the waterfall and pass it from that side.
After the circuit and admiring the panorama of the surrounding peaks, including the Cimone and Zabus peaks, we take another path that runs along the right side of the torrent and leads down to the valley, giving us a succession of views of cascades and pools of water with floating leaves. In some places, we can admire the waterfall from other perspectives and points of view.
In a few minutes we are back at the car, ready to head towards Sella Nevea to enjoy one of the series of excursions of varying difficulty that the place offers.
The suggested visit is easy of access, does not present any difficulty or danger and so is suitable for families with children, even accompanied by their four-legged friends. The difference in height and length are small.
